The Write Stuff
The Southwell Writing Group are celebrating a double success, not only have they been sought out by the prestigious annual Southwell Poetry Festival to showcase their work but have also secured official sponsorship from the UNOCO Group PLC, a Nottingham based company.
The Southwell Writing Group was formed in early 2005. The group evolved from a creative writing class to enable those with a love of literature and writing to share their work with each other. Members of the group work on all sorts of creative writing from poetry to plays. Phil Arnold a member of the Southwell Writing Group said, "We are really excited about being involved with the Southwell Poetry Festival, all of the members of the group have been working hard on their personal contributions and we are looking forward to the prospect of being able to share our work with others."
The Southwell Poetry Festival is a great opportunity for the writing group. The annual festival is well known amongst the poets and writers of the county and offers a great platform for the work of talented locals. The Southwell Writing Group are part of an event called 'Writers Groups Aloud' where members of the group will be reading some of their best poetry.
Joanne Moody, Marketing Manager of UNOGO Group PLC said, "Sponsoring the Southwell Writing Group is a great honour, as an organisation we are greatly involved in education and learning and offer many 100% funded training courses to employers across many industries. Groups like this are an excellent way for people to learn more, enjoy writing and share their work with others.
Improving literacy on a global basis is also important to us and as well as training in this country we are helping developing countries like Africa by working with Oxfam and donating educational resources. From our experience we have seen the difference in people after improving their literacy skills and having groups like the Southwell Writing Group is excellent for people to share their knowledge and continue to develop" said Joanne.
Part of UNOCO Group's sponsorship involves publishing a booklet of the group's work, the professionally printed booklet includes all of the poetry that will be read out at the event plus other contributions from members of the writing group and will be available on the day.
The Southwell Poetry Festival is taking place between the 17th and 19th March. The Southwell Writing Group will be performing their pieces at the Writers Groups Aloud event on the 19th March at The King Charles Lounge, Saracen's Head, Market Place 7.30pm – 9pm. Attendance is free but limited.
