Wide Support and Universal Acclaim at the Official Opening of New Training Centre

The official opening and demonstration day at the UNOCO Olympic Training Centre in Canning Town saw a higher than expected turnout and received universal acclaim from representatives of the referral agencies funding bodies, partners and other stakeholders who attended.
Following the opening ceremony visitors toured the centre facilities to see demonstrations of students work before chatting with staff and students over lunch.
The new Olympic Training Centre*, together with further metropolitan facilities opening soon, will support the UNOCO Group’s commitment to provide occupational training, and sustainable employment for 10,000 Londoners over the next 5 years.
During the opening ceremony, UNOCO Group chairman Ted Stanley congratulated Centre manager Garry Taylor, and his team, for opening the centre three months ahead of schedule, and successfully implementing the unique UNOCO employability programmes that have proved so popular with students, referral agencies and funding bodies. He also pledged UNOCO Group’s support for the agencies working in London to ensure that the jobs created by the regeneration programmes go wherever possible to local people.
The first student graduations, announced on the day included Kurtis Mullin and John Burundu. They will now move onto the UNOCO Docklands Training Centre to start their NVQ Level 2 programme in Construction Groundworks.
UNOCO Group teaching and support staff from the Southern Construction Training Division were joined at the opening by colleagues from the Northern Construction Division and Regional Headquarters.

Guests included representatives from the London Development Agency ‘Connections’, The Metropolitan Police, Job Centre Plus, The Learning and Skills Council, Newham Borough Council, East Potential, The Probation Service, Local Housing Associations, and Tribal Consulting.

* Following discussions with representatives from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), UNOCO Group PLC have agreed to change the centre’s name to avoid any confusion with the forthcoming games. A new name will be announced soon.
